Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles Tendinopathy is condition that causes pain, stiffness, weakness and swelling in the Achilles tendon (joins heel to calf).

It is often caused by overuse of the tendon which creates repeated tiny tears (microtrauma) in the tendon itself which do not have sufficient time to heal.

Other causes of Achilles Tendinopathy may be; wearing inappropriate footwear, having poor technique in training, training on uneven surfaces, or having poor flexibility (particularly in the hamstrings and calf muscles).

After initially resting and applying ice, exercise is the best form of treatment. Calf and hamstring stretches are important, alongside heel drops.

To do these stand on the bottom of the stairs (facing upwards) with your legs slightly apart and heel just off the edge. Lower your heels, keeping your knees straight. Feel the stretch in your Achilles and calf. Hold for a few seconds, then relax. Do 3 sets x 15 reps twice daily to start seeing some improvement in your symptoms.
