Shin Splints

The term "shin splints" refers to pain along, or just behind the tibia (shinbone) and is medically known as Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome.

They occur during physical activity and often result from too much force being placed on the tibia and connective tissues surrounding it. Common in runners, and those who participate in stop-start activities such as basketball, football and tennis, sufferers will notice tenderness or pain along the tibia and may also suffer from mild swelling of the lower leg.

You are at higher risk of suffering from shin splints if:
- You're a runner, especially if you're just starting
- You have 'flat feet' or rigid arches
- You increase the intensity of your workout
- You play sport on hard surfaces

Treatment will consist of rest, ice, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen), arch supports and insoles (where necessary) and stretching and strengthening exercises of the surrounding muscles.
